MATERIALS
BERROCO AIR (50 grs), 5 balls #3140 Santa Ana Winds.
Straight knitting needles, sizes 10 and 11 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
2 Double pointed needles, size 10.
GAUGE
21 sts = 4”; 16 rows = 4” in Pat St on size 11 needles.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
NOTE
Due to the nature of the pat st, the number of sts will vary from row to row. The number of sts given after each row is the number you should have after completing that row.
PATTERN STITCH
Row 1 (WS): Sl 2 WYIF, * (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), k4 tog, rep from * to last 3 sts, (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), p2 – 43 sts.
Row 2: Sl 2 WYIB, purl across row to last 2 sts, k2 – 43 sts.
Row 3: Sl 2 WYIF, * k4 tog, (k1, p1) twice in next st (4 sts made from 1), rep from * to last 6 sts, k4 tog, p2 – 40 sts.
Row 4: Rep Row 2 – 40 sts.
Rep these 4 rows for Pat St.
SHAWL
With smaller straight needles, cast on 48 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Sl 1 WYIB, * k2, p2, rep from * to last 3 sts, end k3.
Row 2: Sl 1 WYIF, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, p3. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 2 1/2” from beg, end on WS. Change to larger straight needles. Work the next row, dec 8 sts evenly spaced across – 40 sts. Work even in Pat St until piece measures 57 1/2” from beg, end on Row 4 of Pat St.
Inc Row (WS): P1, sl 1 WYIF, * k1, p1 in next st, k4, rep from * to last 3 sts, k1, p1 in next st, p2 - 48 sts. Change to smaller straight needles and rep Rows 1 and 2 of previous ribbing until piece measures 60” from beg, end on WS. Bind off all sts knitwise.
FINISHING
Cords (Make 2): With double pointed needles, cast on 4 sts and work I-Cord as follows:
Row 1: * K4, do not turn work. Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS. Rep from * until cord measures 60”. Fasten off. Place markers on left side of shawl as it faces you, 12 1/2” in from each end. Sew one end of each cord to side of shawl at marker. Make two 2” pompons and sew one to the free end of each cord.
