MATERIALS
BERROCO  ZEN COLORS (50 grams), 8(9-9-10-11) hanks #8139 Osaka Mix for tunic, 1 hank for optional necklace. Straight knitting needles, size 11 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Crochet hook, size 5.00 mm (H) for optional necklace.8 Small safety pins for markers.
One 2” wooden button from One World Button Supply for optional necklace.

GAUGE
15 stitches = 4”;  16 rows = 4” in Stockinette Stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

BACK
With straight needles, cast on 69(75-83-91-99) stitches.  Work even in Stockinette Stitch (knit 1 row, purl 1 row) until piece measures 16” from beginning, end when you have just finished a purl row.  Insert pin through first and last stitch on needle to mark beginning of armholes.  Work even until armholes measure 8(8-8 1/2-9-9 1/2)” above pins, end when you have just finished a purl row.  Bind off all stitches.

FRONT
Work the same as for back.  Measure in 4(5-6-7-8)” from outside edges of back and front on bound-off edges and mark with pins.  Sew shoulder seams from pins to outer edges, leaving 10” open at center for neck.

SLEEVES
Note: Sleeves are knit downward from armholes.
With right side of work facing you, using straight needles, pick up and knit 60(60-64-68-72) stitches along armhole edge between pins.  Note: To pick up and knit you will work with only 1 needle.  Join yarn at first pin.  Hold yarn in back of work.  * Insert point of needle through the edge of armhole from right side;  wrap yarn around needle as if to knit and pull through work to right side.  This will leave you with 1 stitch on your needle.  Repeat from * along entire edge of armhole to second pin, keeping stitches as evenly spaced as possible – 60(60-64-68-72) stitches.  Work even in Stockinette Stitch for 1”, end when you have just finished a purl row.  Knit 2 stitches together at beginning and end of the next row (2 stitches decreased).  Repeat this decrease every 1 1/4(1 1/4-1-1- 3/4)” 14(14-16-16-18) times more – 30(30-30-34-34) stitches.  Work even until sleeve measures 18”, end when you have just finished a purl row.  Bind off all stitches.  Repeat for second sleeve.

FINISHING
Lay pieces flat with wrong side (purl side) of work facing up.  Lay a damp pressing cloth on top and iron carefully with a hot steam iron being careful not to stretch pieces beyond measurements shown on schematic.  Turn pieces to right side.  Sew sides together from bottom (cast-on edge) to underarms, then down each sleeve.

Optional Necklace:  With crochet hook, make a chain 365” long.  Fasten off.  Fold chain in half, then in half again, forming 4 strands.  Draw 4 strands up through one hole of button, then down through the other.  Before drawing strands tight, slip all 8 strands through the loop between the 2 holes of the button, then pull tight.  Try on necklace and knot ends in back of neck at desired length.  Weave in ends.
