Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

29” Length circular knitting needle, size 6

GAUGE

20 sts = 4”;  28 rows = 4” in St st on size 8 needles

25 sts = 4” in Porcupine St on size 8 needles

TANK

BACK

With smaller straight needles, using Haricot, cast on 73(79-89-99-109) sts.

Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 1” from beg, end on WS.  Change to larger needles and work even in St st until piece measures 4 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 1 3/4” 4 times more – 83(89-99-109-119) sts.  Work even until piece measures 13” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 5(6-6-7-7) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 73(77-87-95-105) sts.  Dec 1 st each side EVERY row 4(4-8-6-12) times, then every RS row 3(5-4-7-4) times.  AT THE SAME TIME, when armholes measure approximately 1(1-1 1/2-2-2 1/2)”, (before all armhole decs have been completed), and there are 63(67-69-75-75) sts on needle, end on WS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Continuing to work armhole decs, work 21(23-24-27-27) sts, join another hank of Haricot and bind off center 21 sts, work to end.  Working both sides at once, continue to work armhole decs and AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 2 sts at each neck edge 4 times, then dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row 5 times.  When all decs have been completed, work even on 6(6-8-11-13) sts each side until armholes measure 7(7-7 1/2-8-8 1/2)”, end on WS.  Bind off.

 

FRONT

Work same as back.

 

FINISHING

Sew shoulder seams.

Neckband:  With RS facing, using circular needle and Haricot, beg at left shoulder seam, pick up and k230(230-240-250-260) sts around entire neck edge.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 4 rows.  Bind off in ribbing.

Armbands:  With RS facing, using smaller straight needles and Haricot, pick up and k121(121-125-129-133) sts around entire armhole edge.  Beg with Row 2, work in ribbing same as back for 4 rows, end on RS.  Bind off in ribbing.  Sew side and armband seams.

                                               

SHRUG

PORCUPINE STITCH (Multiple of 12 sts + 4)

Row 1:  K2, * yo, k2 tog, rep from * to last 2 sts, end k2.

Row 2:  K2, p to last 2 sts, end k2.

Row 3:  Knit.

Row 4:  Rep Row 2.

Row 5:  K2, * sl 1, k2 tog, psso, k4, yo, k1, yo, k4, rep from * across, end k2.

Rows 6 and 7:  K2, * p3 tog, p4, yo, p1, yo, p4, rep from * across, end k2.

Row 8:  Rep Row 5.

Row 9:  Rep Row 6.

Rep these 9 rows for Porcupine St.

Note:  Due to the odd number of rows, rows which were RS rows on one repeat will be WS rows on the next.

 

LEFT SIDE

With larger needles, using Cycle, cast on 148 sts.  Work even in Porcupine St for 6”, end on WS.

Next Row (RS):  Knit, decreasing 28 sts evenly spaced across – 120 sts.  Knit 2 rows, purl 1 row, knit 4 rows, end on WS.  Work even in St st until piece measures 28(30)” from beg, end on WS.  Sl sts onto a spare needle and set aside.

 

RIGHT SIDE

Work same as left side.

 

FINISHING

Hold needles parallel to each other with the points facing in the same direction and weave center seam tog using Kitchener St.  Optional:  All sts may be bound off, then sewn tog if desired.  Fold shawl in half along fold line shown on diagram.  Sew edges of Porcupine St tog at each end for 6”.

Edging:  With RS facing, using circular needle and Cycle, beg at one seam, pick up and k532(580) sts around entire edge of shrug.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in k2, p2 ribbing for 6”.  Bind off in ribbing.
