GAUGE

20 sts = 4”;  28 rows = 4” in St st on size 8 needles

6 sts = 3/4”;  28 rows = 4” in Welt Pat on size 8 needles

WELT PATTERN (Worked over 6 sts)

Row 1 (RS):  P1, k1, sl 2 sts with yarn in back, k1, p1.

Row 2:  Purl.

Rep these 2 rows for Welt Pat.

 

BACK

With smaller needles, cast on 114(118-126-130-138-150-158) sts.

Ribbing:  Row 1 (RS):  K2, * p2, k2, rep from * across.

Row 2:  P2, * k2, p2, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 2” from beg, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 27(25-29-27-25-27-25) sts evenly spaced across – 87(93-97-103-113-123-133) sts.

Establish Pat St:  Row 1 (RS):  K20(23-25-28-33-38-43), place marker, work Row 1 of Welt Pat over 6 sts, place marker, k35, place marker, work Row 1 of Welt Pat over 6 sts, place marker, k to end.

Row 2:  P to first marker, work Row 2 of Welt Pat to next marker, p to next marker, work Row 2 of Welt Pat to next marker, p to end.  Work even in pat as established until piece measures 3 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st each end of next row, then every 1” 4 times more – 77(83-87-93-103-113-123) sts.  Work even until piece measures 9 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st each end of next row, then every 3/4” 4 times more – 87(93-97-103-113-123-133) sts.  Work even until piece measures 13 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armholes:  Bind off 4(4-4-4-4-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 75(81-85-91-101-109-117) sts.  Dec 1 st at each armhole edge every RS row 5(8-8-8-11-12-14) times – 65(65-69-75-79-85-89) sts.  Work even until armholes measure 7 1/2(7 1/2-8-8 1/2-8 1/2-9-9 1/2)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 5(5-5-6-8-9-9) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 5(5-6-7-7-8-9) sts at beg of the next 4 rows, end on WS.  Sl remaining 35 sts onto holder for back neck.

 

LEFT FRONT

With smaller needles, cast on 50(54-54-58-62-70-74) sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 2”, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 10(12-10-10-10-12-12) sts evenly spaced across – 40(42-44-48-52-58-62) sts.

Establish Pat St:  Row 1 (RS):  K20(23-25-28-33-38-43), place marker, work Row 1 of Welt Pat over 6 sts, place marker, k to end.

Row 2:  P to first marker, work Row 2 of Welt Pat to next marker, p to end.  Work even in pat as established until piece measures 3 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Dec 1 st at beg of the next row, then at same edge every 1” 4 times more – 35(37-39-43-47-53-57) sts.  Work even until piece measures 9 1/2” from beg, end on WS.  Inc 1 st at beg of the next row, then at same edge every 3/4” 4 times more – 40(42-44-48-52-58-62) sts.  Work even until piece measures 13 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Armhole:  Next Row (RS):  Bind off 4(4-4-4-4-5-6) sts, work to end.  Work 1 row even.  Bind off 2 sts at beg of the next row – 34(36-38-42-46-51-54) sts.  Dec 1 st at armhole edge every RS row 5(8-8-8-11-12-14) times – 29(28-30-34-35-39-40) sts.  Work even until armhole measures 5 1/2(5 1/2-6-6 1/2-6 1/2-7-7 1/2)”, end on WS.

Shape Neck:  Next Row (RS):  Work to the last 5 sts, then sl these sts onto holder – 24(23-25-29-30-34-35) sts.  Dec 1 st at neck edge EVERY row 4(2-2-4-2-4-2) times, then every RS row 5(6-6-5-6-5-6) times – 15(15-17-20-22-25-27) sts.  When armhole measures 7 1/2(7 1/2-8-8 1/2-8 1/2-9-9 1/2)”, end on WS.

Shape Shoulder:  Bind off 5(5-5-6-8-9-9) sts at armhole edge once, then 5(5-6-7-7-8-9) sts twice.

 

RIGHT FRONT

Work to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping and placement of Welt Pat.  Work side decs and incs at end of RS rows.  Bind off for armholes and shoulder on WS rows.  Work armhole decs at end of RS rows.  Sl sts for neck onto holder at end of WS row.  Work neck decs at beg of RS rows.

 

SLEEVES

With smaller needles, cast on 54 sts.  Work in ribbing same as back for 2”, end on RS.  Change to larger needles and p the next row, dec 10 sts evenly spaced across – 44 sts.

Establish Pat St:  Row 1 (RS):  K19, place marker, work Row 1 of Welt Pat over 6 sts, place marker, k19.

Row 2:  P to first marker, work Row 2 of Welt Pat to next marker, p to end.  Work in pat as established, inc 1 st each side every 1 1/2(1 1/2-1 1/4-1-3/4-1/2-1/2)” 9(9-11-14-17-19-22) times – 62(62-66-72-78-82-88) sts.  Work even until sleeve measures 18” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Cap:  Bind off 4(4-4-4-4-5-6) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 50(50-54-60-66-68-72) sts.  Dec 1 st each end of every other RS row 5(5-5-5-2-4-4) times, then every RS row 6(6-6-6-12-8-8) times, end on WS – 28(28-32-38-38-44-48) sts.  Bind off 3 sts at beg the next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining 22(22-26-32-32-38-42) sts.

 

FINISHING

Left Frontband:  With smaller needles, cast on 13 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.

Row 2:  Sl 1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until band, when slightly stretched, reaches from lower left front edge to beg of neck shaping, end on WS.  Sl sts onto holder.  Sew inner edge of frontband to left front edge.  Mark placement of 5 buttons, the first 1” up from lower edge, the last 4 1/2” down from holder and the others evenly spaced between.

Right Frontband:  Work same as left frontband for 1”, end on WS.

Buttonhole Row (RS):  Work 6 sts, bind off 2 sts, work to end.

Following Row:  Work in ribbing as established, cast on 2 sts over sts bound off on previous row.  Complete to correspond to left frontband.  Sew inner edge of frontband to right front edge.  Sew shoulder seams.

Collar:  With RS facing, join yarn at right front edge, work 13 sts from right front band holder, 5 sts from right neck holder, pick up and k24 sts along right front neck edge, k35 sts from back holder increasing 6 sts evenly spaced across (41 sts), pick up and k24 sts along left front neck edge, then work 5 sts from left front holder, then 13 sts from left front band holder – 125 sts.

Row 1 (WS):  Sl 1, * k3, p3, rep from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2:  Sl 1, * p3, k3, rep from * to last 4 sts, p4.  Rep these 2 rows until collar measures 2”, end on RS.

Inc Row (WS):  Sl 1, * k2, M1k, k1, p2, M1p, p1, rep from * to last 4 sts, k2, M1k, k2 – 166 sts.  Work even in ribbing as established until collar measures 5 1/2”, end on WS.

Eyelet Row (WS):  Sl 1, * k4, p2 tog, yo twice, p2 tog, rep from * to last 5 sts, k5.

Following Row:  Work in ribbing as established, purling both yo’s – 20 eyelets.  Work even in ribbing as established until collar measures 7”, end on RS.  Bind off in ribbing.  Sew in sleeves.  Sew side and sleeve seams.  Sew on buttons.  Weave scarf in and out of eyelets as in photo.
