DIPSY PONCHO
With smaller 16 circular needle, cast on 82(88-94) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up (use different colored marker here). Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 1". Change to larger 16 circular needle.
1st St st Band: Rnd 1: M1k, k39(42-45), M1k, place marker, k2, place marker, M1k, k39(42-45), M1k, place marker, k2 86(92-98) sts.
Rnd 2: M1k, k to next marker, M1k, sl marker, k2, sl marker, M1k, k to next marker, M1k, sl marker, k2 90(96-102) sts. Rep Rnd 2 13(17-22) times more 142(164-190) sts. Note: When there are too many sts to fit comfortably on 16 circular needle, change to 29 circular needle.
1st Garter St Band: Rnd 1: P to first marker, sl marker, k2, sl marker, p to next marker, sl marker, k2.
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 2 of 1st St st band. Rep the last 2 rnds 6(8-10) times more, then Rnd 1 once 170(200-234) sts.
2nd St st Band: Rnd 1: Knit.
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 2 of 1st St st band. Rep the last 2 rnds 9(11-13) times more, then Rnd 1 once 210(248-290) sts.
2nd Garter St Band: Rnd 1: Purl.
Rnd 2: Rep Rnd 2 of 1st Garter St band. Rep the last 2 rnds 6(8-10) times more, then Rnd 1 once 238(284-334) sts; piece should measure approximately 12(15-18) when measured straight up front and back from point. Bind off all sts.
FINISHING
Fringe: Cut two 11" long strands of yarn. Put strands tog and fold in half. With crochet hook, draw center of strands through space between 2 center sts at front of poncho forming a lp. Pull ends of fringe through this lp. In this manner, make fringe in every other st along entire lower edge of poncho. Trim fringe to even off if necessary.
Note: For speedier cutting, wrap yarn multiple times around a piece of cardboard that is the desired finished length of the fringe. Cut the lower edge to free wrapped strands. Sew the five buttons in the first Garter St band down from front neck with 1 button in the center, 1 at each shoulder edge and the others evenly spaced between. Cut three 7" long strands of yarn and tie around the shank of each button to form fringe. Trim to even off if necessary.

Lower Edging: Rnd 1: With RS facing, using crochet hook and CC, beg at center back, * work 1 sc in lower edge of poncho, ch 2, skip 1/2" on poncho, rep from * around entire lower edge of poncho, join with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, skip 1st sc, * work 2 scs in ch-2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around, join with sl st in ch-1.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc and ch-1 sp around, join with a sl st in ch-1. Fasten off.
Neck Edging: Rnd 1: With RS facing, using crochet hook and CC, beg at center back, * work 1 sc in neck edge of poncho, ch 1, skip 1/2 " on poncho, rep from * around entire neck edge of poncho, join with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc and ch-1 sp around, join with a sl st in ch-1. Fasten off.
Twisted Cord: Cut three 133 long (or 3 1/2 times the desired finished length of cord) strands of CC. Put strands tog and fold in half. Tie loose ends tog. Holding the knot in your hand, slip the loop over a hook and pull tight. Slip a pencil through the knotted end and twist until cord is so tight that it cant be twisted further and starts to double back on itself. Put 1 finger in center of cord and carefully fold in half, letting 2 ends of cord twist tog. Tie both ends of cord in a knot, leaving a 1" end. Cut ends for tassels. Fold cord in half and sew center point to center of front neck. Tie ends in a bow if desired. Note: For larger child, if neck is too large, weave cord through neck edging and use as a drawstring.
